What Canva's license, your PLR license and platforms like Etsy each allow, and how to deliver templates the right way

Quick answer

Yes, you can sell products made from Canva PLR templates, but three sets of rules apply at once: the creator's PLR license, Canva's own content rules, and the rules of the platform where you sell. Canva says you can only sell original designs, never Canva content on a standalone basis. Templates that contain Pro content may be sold only as Canva template links, not as PDFs or other files, and Canva says template links can be created only on paid plans. Templates built from Free content alone can also be sold as files. Many PLR licenses also separate selling finished products from reselling the templates themselves, so read yours before you list anything.

Canva PLR templates are editable designs, made in Canva by a third-party creator, that you buy with Private Label Rights. They usually arrive as a short PDF or ZIP that holds one or more Canva template links, and you copy each design into your own account to edit it. Search for whether you can sell them and you mostly find product pages with their own license terms, not an explanation of how those terms fit with Canva's rules.

This guide does that. It starts from Canva's own Help Center and Content License Agreement, then shows how your PLR license and your sales platform fit around them. If you are still choosing a source, our guide to where to buy digital products to resell compares the options.

Disclosure and limits: The Plr Mrr Store publishes this guide and sells Canva template bundles with PLR and MRR rights, so we have an interest in the topic. Canva's rules were checked on Canva's own pages in October 2026, and Canva can change them, so read the current text before you act. Licenses vary by seller and product. This is general information, not legal advice.

Three Sets of Rules Decide What You Can Sell

A Canva PLR template sits under three agreements at the same time. A yes from one does not cancel a no from another:

LayerWho sets itWhat it decidesWhere to check
1. PLR or MRR licenseThe template creator or sellerWhether you may edit, rebrand, resell the templates or only finished products, bundle them and pass rights onThe license text on the product page or inside the download
2. Canva's content rulesCanvaWhat you may do with the Free and Pro graphics, photos, fonts and templates inside the designCanva's Help Center page on products for sale, and the Content License Agreement
3. Platform rulesEtsy, Payhip or your own storeWhether this type of item is accepted and how it must be describedThe platform's seller policies

The PLR license covers the creator's design. It does not replace Canva's rules for the Canva content inside it, and it cannot override a platform's rules. Our guide to MRR digital products explains how PLR, MRR and resell rights differ.

What Canva's Rules Say

Canva's Help Center says that content license and commercial use can be confusing and that it cannot always give a clear answer to a specific situation. The Content License Agreement is the legal text. These are the rules that matter for template sellers:

Allowed: using Free and Pro content to design and sell templates, printed products and e-books, as long as the result is an original design.
Not allowed: selling any Canva content on a standalone basis, selling stock clipart files built from Canva elements, and selling templates that contain Pro content as a PDF or any other file type, whether flattened or not.

What counts as "standalone" use

Canva counts the following as standalone use of its content: using it in its original form, applying only a filter, changing colors, resizing, cropping or outlining it, or placing a single item on a page with little more than a border. That is the same test a PLR seller faces when a template is only recolored. In our reading, a recolored template and a recolored element have the same problem: the creative work is still someone else's.

Why Pro content has to stay inside Canva

The Content License Agreement allows "design templates solely for use on Canva" for all content, and it adds extra permissions, such as using content in templates distributed for sale to third parties, only for Free content. Pro content licenses are issued when a design is exported, and each one covers use in a single design. In our reading, this is why Canva wants Pro templates to travel as template links: the person who opens the link edits the design inside Canva, and the license is issued when that person exports.

Other content that limits commercial use

If a design mixes content categories, the most restrictive category applies to the whole design. Canva's Branded content (for example its Disney templates) and Education content (marked "Resource") are made available for personal or educational use only, not for commercial use. A template that contains either one cannot be sold.

What counts as a template, and what does not

Canva defines a template as a design with a set layout and style that the end user is meant to edit or customize. Its example: a wedding invitation is a template, but an e-book is not, even if the e-book has sections the reader fills in. E-books follow separate rules: Pro content in an e-book must be designed in Canva, and unedited Pro images are limited to 480,000 pixels per file.

Which Delivery Formats Canva Allows

The format you deliver decides which content you may include. This table follows Canva's Help Center:

What you deliverContent insideCanva's position
Canva template linkFree and Pro contentAllowed for original designs
Template as a PDF, image or other fileFree content and your own photos onlyAllowed
Template as a PDF, image or other fileAny Pro contentNot allowed, flattened or not
Finished product the buyer does not edit (printable card, poster, e-book)Free and Pro contentAllowed for original designs. E-book Pro images have a pixel limit
Individual graphics or clipart files made from Canva elementsAnyNot allowed

Most PLR bundles arrive as a short PDF that holds the template links. Canva's page does not mention that delivery file by name. It speaks of selling templates "as Canva template links," and a link-only PDF is a way of handing over those links while the designs themselves stay inside Canva. Do not export the Pro designs as flattened files.

Template links need a paid plan. Canva's Help Center says that creating and sharing a template link is available on Canva Pro, Teams, Enterprise and certain education and nonprofit plans. People who receive a link can open and edit it. So if you plan to resell Canva PLR templates as links of your own, expect to need a paid Canva plan. Free accounts can still deliver templates built only from Free content as files.

Template or Finished Product? What Your PLR License Says

PLR license wording differs a lot between sellers, and the differences decide what you may sell. On the public product pages we looked at, the clauses fall into a few patterns:

Clause patternWhat it meansWhat to check
"Sell finished products, not the templates"You may edit the templates and sell what you make (printables, planners, graphics) but not resell the templates or links themselvesCommon in starter packs. Suits sellers who build finished products
"Resell the templates with PLR or MRR rights"You may sell the templates onward, sometimes with rights for your buyersCheck for Pro content, which forces template links
"Edit before you sell" or "do not pass on as-is"You must change the cover, icons or content before listingMatches Canva's originality rule
"No giveaways, no PLR membership sites"You may not give the files away or add them to free membership sitesCheck before using a template as a lead magnet
"Do not claim original authorship"You may rebrand the product but not say you created the underlying designRead the exact wording. Canva also bans claiming ownership of its own content
Platform limitsSome licenses exclude marketplaces that prohibit PLRSee the Etsy section below

If a license is silent on a point that matters to you, ask the seller in writing and keep the reply.

Questions to Ask Before You Buy Canva PLR Templates

Ask these of any seller, including us:

  1. Where did the designs come from? Original work, or Canva library templates with light edits? Canva does not allow selling a template as-is.
  2. Is there Pro content inside? If so, are the designs delivered as template links?
  3. Is there any Branded or Education content? Items such as Disney elements or those marked "Resource" are not for commercial use.
  4. Do the designs rely on other people's fonts or photos? They can carry their own licenses.
  5. Can you sell the templates themselves, or only finished products?
  6. Can you edit and rebrand them? Must you change the cover or icons first?
  7. Can you give them away or put them in a membership?
  8. Which platforms are excluded?
  9. Does the seller offer support if a link breaks or a template changes?

Can You Sell Canva PLR Templates on Etsy?

Only if the product becomes your own design. Etsy requires digital downloads to be designed by the seller, and Canva requires original designs, so the two rules point to the same practical answer: rebuild the template rather than recolor it. Our full guide, Can You Sell PLR Products on Etsy?, sets out what Etsy's policy says and what it does not. For the Etsy side of Canva products specifically, see Canva templates for sale on Etsy.

How to Turn Canva PLR Templates Into a Product You Can Sell

  1. Copy each template into your own account. Open the link and make a copy so that you work on your own version.
  2. Rebuild, do not just recolor. Replace layouts, add your own graphics and written content, and aim the product at one narrow audience.
  3. Audit the content. Note which elements are Free or Pro, and remove any Branded or Education content.
  4. Choose the delivery. Use template links if any Pro content remains, and files only for Free-only designs. Finished products that the buyer does not edit are a separate case.
  5. Create your own link. In the editor, open Share, select Template link and then Create template link. Wrap it in a short PDF with instructions, and test it from a separate account.
  6. Write an exact listing. Say what is included, how the buyer opens it, and whether Pro elements are inside.
  7. Choose where to sell and price after fees.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Following only the PLR license: Canva's own rules still apply to the content inside the design.
  • Selling flattened files with Pro content: templates with Pro elements must be delivered as template links.
  • Reselling a recolored template: it may still count as someone else's work for Canva and for the platform.
  • Ignoring Branded and Education content: one such element can make the whole design unsuitable for sale.
  • Telling buyers "no Canva Pro needed" without checking: exporting a design with Pro content needs a Pro license, which free users pay for. State it in the listing.
  • Broken or private links: test every link from a separate account.
  • Generic designs: broad bundles are harder to sell than templates made for one audience.
  • Weak support: buyers will ask how to open and edit a template, so include clear instructions.
  • Never rechecking the terms: Canva can change its content license, so recheck before large launches.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can you sell Canva PLR templates?
Yes, within three sets of rules: your PLR license, Canva's content rules and the platform's policy. You can only sell original designs, Pro content must stay in template links, and your license may allow only finished products rather than the templates themselves.
Q: Can I sell Canva templates as a PDF or image file?
Not if they contain Canva Pro content. Canva says templates with Pro content can only be sold as template links, flattened or not. Templates made from Free content and your own photos can be sold as files or as links.
Q: Do I need Canva Pro to sell Canva PLR templates?
To create template links of your own, yes. Canva's Help Center says creating and sharing a template link is available on paid plans, not free accounts. With a free account you can still deliver Free-only designs as files, if your license allows it.
Q: Do my buyers need Canva Pro?
Buyers can open and edit a template link without a paid plan. But exporting a design that contains Pro content requires a Pro content license, which free users pay for. Say this in your listing.
Q: Is changing the colors enough to make a template mine?
Canva counts changing colors, resizing or cropping content as standalone use, so recoloring alone is unlikely to be enough. Add your own layouts, graphics and written content.
Q: Can I resell a template from Canva's own library?
No. Canva says you cannot sell its content on a standalone basis, and a design built from a Canva template needs your own creative effort so that it is not sold as-is.
Q: Can I sell templates that use Disney or other branded content?
No. Canva makes Branded content, including its Disney templates, available for personal or educational use only, not commercial use. A design that contains it cannot be sold.
Q: Can I sell Canva PLR templates on Etsy?
Only if you follow Etsy's rules. Etsy requires digital items to be designed by you, so rebuild PLR templates substantially and deliver them as Canva template links where Pro content is used. See our Etsy guide for detail.
Q: What is the difference between PLR and MRR for Canva templates?
PLR usually allows editing and rebranding, while MRR usually allows resale as-is and often passing rights on. Some bundles include both. Our guide to MRR digital products explains each license.
Q: Can Canva change these rules?
Yes. Canva reserves the right to change its content licenses, so recheck its Help Center and Content License Agreement before you launch or update a product.

In short, a yes to selling Canva PLR templates depends on three layers: the creator's license, Canva's content rules and the platform's policy. Sell original designs, keep Pro content inside template links, check whether your license covers templates or only finished products, and rebuild what you buy until it is clearly yours.
